November TIPS
If you have been following our TIPS Newsletter, you know that we have been focusing on what we call Workplace Excellence: The Circle of Success. The Steps, Diagnose, Measure, Implement, Monitor and Action, work together to provide the infrastructure for a motivated and productive Team. This month we focus on the final step: Action.
Action is the process of actualizing all of the efforts which have gone before. Gathering information and creating structure without exercising a conclusion is not only a waste of time, but demoralizing or negatively enabling to the workplace. The axiom, “If you always do what you have always done, the outcome will always be the same,” describes perfectly the outcome of inaction. Recognition and Reward, or Corrective Action must ultimately close the Circle of Success if in fact a successful Team is the goal. Lack of recognition can cause insidious decay in the foundation of a productive team. It is human nature to desire recognition for work well-performed, and the absence of recognition is always damaging. Well-conceived recognition has the secondary benefit of enhanced communication with the recipient as well as the work community in which the employee resides. Conversely, corrective action sets the stage for improved performance or, lastly, the departure of the employee who is detracting from the team. Failure to take either action is simply unacceptable.
